## 0.1 FTE I have been working at WdKA since 2018. It has been great, because of the colleagues and students. The school structure and managerial decision-making has made it anything but easy for staff and students. Many will be able to attest to this, I could leave a long trail of grievances from others, but anyone curious can do some straightforward online searches and find out (keyword hints: casual WdKA, Hogeschool Rotterdam + student wellbeing, social safety + student complaints WdKA, bezuinigingen, etc.). In 2026 the school decided to terminate the Honours Programme.^[Where I was working, Sami Hammana invited me to work with him in 2018, and from a team of two we became double digits almost immediately because of the program’s popularity and anti-elitist decision to make it open to anyone, and not just “high achievers”.] The termination reason was supposedly that the Honours degree exams were very costly, involving many moving parts and organizational complexity. Fair enough. However, there was no clear indication of where all the HP staff would go, but we all found it quite disconcerting that the WdKA not only dismantled our well-running Honours Programme, they also proceeded to randomly allocate its tutors to different programs in the school (and, in my case, left me without direction/tasks). For a while now (since June 2025-ongoing) I have been asking WdKA to give me a mandate, but have not received one. I am on a 0.1 FTE contract, and I have been using these 4 weekly hours to meet with students and help them with their current struggles and projects. But something’s not right about this. I met with Maziar Afrassiabi and talked briefly about this dilemma, I asked him if he had ideas about what I could do with my time. Maziar mentioned I should probably do what I think is good education. I said I was already doing that by meeting with the students who needed help. He also jokingly said to do it “_voor het goede doel”_ (for charity). That gave me the idea to go with the cash I earn from these 0.1 FTE hours (374,45 euros a month) and sit at a table in a public space at WdKA,^[In practice, to be fair: it will be this amount minus 1 hour of my time for sitting there.] leaving the cash there for the taking, but before the taking happens: hopefully having some interesting discussions with students and staff. This should be a good learning experience for all of us. This ongoing performance (times TBA, starting in January 2027) deals, therefore, with the following themes (and more): The project cuts the “middle man” (myself): if a lot of the problems right now have emerged because of cutting corners in the name of “efficiency”, this project proposes cutting all costs, making my FTE as efficient as can be, by redirecting my salary straight to the students. The students pay high tuition fees and barely get any space, contact hours, materials, etc., back for this money. In many ways, this gives students what they need (since the school treats them like customers). Customers want value for money, this projects gives them that and, additionally, as the school would like to monetize and earn more from what they offer: it also creates money from value by converting an intangible asset/stored investment (the tutor) into liquid cash. It also creates and buys me the artwork I want. Money becomes, in many ways, a frictionless spinning in the void. Most importantly: it generates a conversation about the school’s most salient problems right now, and inquires about ways in which to deal with them. The WdKA building used to be a bank, and in many ways it still is. %% | | | | |---|---|---| |**Value for Money**|How can I spend less or get more?|**Cost Efficiency** (Buyer mindset)| |**Money for Value**|How can I earn more from what I offer?|**Monetization & Worth** (Seller or investor mindset)|
